What level of detail does a short-range scan capture?

It's important to understand that scanning is not an exact copy of your part. Our process is built for reverse engineering: we use the scan data as a reference to rebuild the part as a solid, parametric CAD model suitable for manufacturing. In that process, some details of the original part will be simplified or lost — the model reflects our interpretation of the part's design intent, not a perfect replica. If your part has features we can't fully capture, we model them based on the best available information, which may slightly differ from the original.

  • There are a few physical limitations to be aware of. We use a laser scanner, which relies on line of sight and surface reflectivity, so certain parts and features are inherently harder to capture:

  • Black, highly reflective, or transparent surfaces can be difficult to scan accurately.

  • Deep holes, internal cavities, and internal geometry can't be seen by the scanner and may not be captured.

  • Very small features — generally anything under about 0.3 mm — may not be reliably captured.

  • Threads, knurling, and fine textures are typically identified from the scan and then re-modeled as standard features rather than captured directly.

  • Flexible or easily deformed parts can shift shape during scanning, which affects accuracy.

If your part has specific critical features or tolerances, let us know up front and we'll give them special attention.
