The situation

High-volume bottling lines depend on change parts. A puck is one of them: the fixture that carries and positions bottles as they move through filling and packaging. When a plant needs more of them, someone has to have a manufacturable model.

This plant didn't. The puck existed as a physical part with no CAD and no drawing, and the first message to CADmore was a phone photo with three rough dimensions. What the plant needed wasn't a scan or a sketch; it was a production-ready model, dimensioned drawings their team could approve internally, and then actual parts.

Why reverse engineering

A photo and three dimensions can't drive production. The part had to be reverse engineered from the physical sample into clean CAD, then documented in a dimensioned engineering drawing the plant could route through its own approval and purchasing process. That drawing matters as much as the model at a company this size: it is what internal stakeholders sign off on.

What we did

  • Received the sample puck and delivered the reverse-engineered model the next day.
  • Followed with a dimensioned engineering drawing for the plant's internal review.
  • When the plant revised the spec mid-project - the puck needed to be 15 mm deeper while keeping the same 80 mm height - CADmore returned the revised drawing the same day, and flagged the material and cost impact up front rather than after approval.
  • After the production order was approved, CADmore managed the run through Xometry: 100 pucks CNC machined in food-grade HDPE/UHMW plastic, with CADmore handling the quoting, ordering, and logistics so the plant had one point of contact.
  • The first batch came back with a dimensional issue. CADmore caught it in QA, said so, and re-ran a corrected batch of 100 before the plant's final sign-off.
  • A final design review with the plant team closed the project.

The outcome

Seven months after delivery, on a routine check-in, the plant's engineering manager wrote back:

“So far parts that we received are working well!”

The pucks are in service on the line, the revised drawing is on file for the next run, and the plant has a supplier that can go from a sample part to delivered production units without being handed a model first.
